As far as re-creating Edge sounds the last 2 albums now that they are imbedded into my sub-conscious are not that great. The only song that really inspired me to copy was Vertigo, the others I could leave out.
ATYCLB in my opinion was the last great U2 album. Great songs to re-creat.

interesting point you make, bob. For me, only time can tell, if an album is really great. (for me personally, that is) not just good. but great. really great.
i really like some of the newer songs. great songwriting, some great guitar (unknown caller has one of my top 5 solos) here and there.
But for an album as a whole? the more time is passing, the more outstanding the 90s are for me. (and yes, that means POP as well)
just personal view, of course.

U2 have already made so much many album, that it must be very difficult to find a fresh way to produce something really new.
Among the "top" bands, they maybe the band which take the higher risks in songwriting
I also like album now, which I didn't like a lot when they came out.
Maybe just because I enjoy to try to play myself some of the songs.
Maybe because i must listen more carefully to the music because of that, ...

i think good music is like a wine. its ripening how time goes by. I remember how i was disappointed everytime when new album came out and after few years i just love them all :) the same for concrete songs, songs i didnt like at first are now my favourite mostly :) maybe even me is ripening lol
