Hi everyone, I just picked up an A3 with the SPC-01 loaded in it and hope to do some covers with it in the near future. I ran across some info on here that had to do with downloading the patches from SPC-01 to SPC-09 and Guitar Hero's into either a Sendsx or midi-ox file type and though I'am not really not knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff and really not sure how much of these patches would really be used on U2 covers but I was hoping someone has gone through this process and had some luck doing it with success and could possibly walk me through it. I do still have to get ahold of a cable with the midi and USB on it. Any help is really appreciated. Thank You

First get a midi-usb cable to connect it to your computer. I have the M-audio Uno, which works great and it's cheap:) Then you have to download midi-ox to your computer and install it on your computer. With the A3 you must go into the Utility menu and select MIDI, then LOAD, then tell your software to send the file. With the A2 you do not need to go into the menus, it will receive the SYSEX file automatically. Note that the SYSEX file coming in will overwrite whatever is currently stored on your unit, so you may want to save your current settings in a SYSEX file of your own. To do this, run a MIDI cable from your unit's MIDI Out port to your computer's soundcard MIDI In port, then tell your software to receive a file. On your unit, go into the Utility menu and select MIDI, then SAVE. For further info and manuals go here:http://http://korgaseries.org/

I also use a midi-usb cable and the SysEx97 software for my A2. No problem with this.

Hi, Me again, I'am having trouble loading the A3 with the send sx files I downloaded from the korg site from my windows xp. I bought a Hosa Technologies usb interface plugged it in to the in and out midi ports on the A3 and of course the usb cable to the Desktop. Brought up the Guitar2 file clicked on it and unzipped it. It opened up into the sendsx, so I set the midi out setting on the sendsx to the usb and then went to the A3 and went to the utility and went to midi then load. It then showed loading on the a3 screen then I clicked send on the sendsx program and it showed the file being sent and when it finished it showed it went through ok but the a3 never received anything and was still displaying loading on the a3 screen. I did notice on my usb device that the midi light never lit the center light was flickering when the send was being attempted and the usb light was allways lit. I'am not really sure what to do from here. I would really appreciate any help with this. Thanks for you time.

Thanks for your help, I have Midi-ox on my ( Windows XP) desktop but not sure how to use it with the A3:rolleyes: When I click on the SPC card I want to send from my Desktop it automatically opens up with SendSX. Not sure how to use the Midi-ox to send it down to the A3. Any step by step would be good. I also wanted to save what I allready have on the A3 to my Desktop and have it to put back incase something went wrong. I do not have any cards to store anything on, just onboard memory. Sorry for the lack of knowledge. I forgot to ask. Were you able to do this transfere with Windows 7 or just XP. not sure if the korg files would be supported by the 7 or not. Thanks, I hope someone can help:confused:

I had no problem getting it set up on the computer using xp but the transfere to the a3 is my issue. I did notice each time I would try to load it into the a3 the Midi Out light would not light up but the transfere appeared to load on the windows as if it was loading it fully. I may have an issue with the Hosa Tracklink, I can't find any info online on how it should work. Since alot of you here are having good luck with the M-Audio, I think I'll get one and give it another shot. It never pays going cheap on something:( Thanks for your help anyway. I'll post if I have any success with this.

did you ever have any luck with the m audio because I am trying the hosa right now with windows 8 and nothing. It says it sent the data but the A3 says nothing but Loading....

Yes it is, you'll need a usb-midi cable.
You can download the data here, http://korgaseries.org/original_cards.php
I thinks there's a "how to" also on that website. Real easy, even i did it ;)

I use the m-audio uno and that worked perfectly. I dont know if there are issues with certain cables but that could be the problem.
I used to have another cable for updating some gear and that didnt work either but the m-audio cable sorted that out without issues

Got much of these instructions from Bert, also posted up top. This works great!
Overview
1) Get a Korg A3 multieffects rack unit
2) Get a midi-to-USB cable
3) Download the "SPC-01 Guitar" user card from korgaseries.org to your computer
4) Transfer the user card to your Korg A3 using the midi cable
5) Select Preset 76
6) Tweak to taste
More detailed
1) First get a midi-usb cable to connect it to your computer. I have the M-audio Uno, which works great and it's cheap.
2) Then you have to download midi-ox to your computer and install it on your computer.
3) With the A3 you must go into the Utility menu and select MIDI, then LOAD, then tell your software to send the file.
4) With the A2 you do not need to go into the menus, it will receive the SYSEX file automatically.
5) Note that the SYSEX file coming in will overwrite whatever is currently stored on your unit, so you may want to save your current settings in a SYSEX file of your own. I had this same issue when I bought mine a while back and from what I remember I used SendSx and a Uno also to get it to load. I tried an off brand cable before that with no luck at all, but downloaded this SendSx from the old Google Groups thread and it works perfectly.
Here were the steps I used if it helps....
set A2/3 send card utility to USB UNO interface
Set midi channel out to raw on the A2/3 utility, I don't know why, but I seem to have to do this every now and then but have had it work without engaging the raw data box
Set the rear switch on the a3 to out, Again not sure if this is vital because it has worked either way.
not sure if this matters but set Omni in the utilities section to ON
Then just drag your Unzipped file which should show itself as a colored musical note on your desktop into the A2/3 Send card utility
Put A3 into load mode then hit send on your computer and if it goes through your A3 should display Load Complete on the Display, This may take up to 10 sec.
Any File loaded into the A3 will overwrite any current file but can be copied to a Ram Card if you have one available. So basically you can run 1-100 with onboard memory and 101-200 with your card memory.
Hope that helps but this is what I came up with during the process. Good Luck..........

These are my results:
62 for Numb - ok on distortion but has no flange
43 Zoo Station - not even close, however I found program 86 with some adjustment was good for the distortion part of ZS
54 The Fly - with another external delay and a wah - spot on
27 The Fly solo - not even close
76 Mysterious Ways - with some tweeks, it rocks

Your right discothequeLP, after looking I found the above example for Numb - it has flange.
Here's a patch for The Fly:
HDST 56 62 12 2.20 3 -6
xcit off
wah off
DLY3 30 3.5 -15 0 30
cho2 off
SDLY 150 0 270 2 2 10
It's not as simple as that though, those patches are factory defaults and need a lot of tweaking before they'll truely sound like the U2 songs. Here's mine for the *live* Mysterious Ways sound:
Code:
......A....B....C.....D....E.....F
DST2..88...28...6.60..5....3.50
WAH2..60...60...80....1....20...

DLY1..210..0...-35...22...-.....6
FLN1..0.80.14...55....0....0.2..54
PL1...1.2..16...20....6....2....2
You'll need to adjust the wah sensitivity depeding on your guitar, but it's DEFINETELY NOT 95, as most people seem to be setting it... At 95, the wah dies out much too quickly.

Mysterious Ways Settings Korg A3
1. Guitar: Les Paul (not Strat), rhythm pickup
a. play this with a Les Paul on rythm pickup, with all volumes and tones at max
b. For the MW sound, in order to get that much talked about "Vroom" sound, I think it really de-pends on the guitar you're playing through. If you're using a strat with the single coil pup, I don't think it will push the signal enough - I use a Les Paul, with the humbucker of course, at a pretty high volume, and it seems to do the trick in pushing the signal over the edge and get-ting the desired sound.
c. It never even entered my head to use a strat for Mysterious Ways - I've always played that on my les paul
2. Signal chain: OD after or before A3? A3 not in the FX loop.
a. Some say that the best chain is guitar- a3- amp.
b. Add Boss OD1 for just a little punch
c. Guitar Triad/Sd-1 -> A3 -> Vox
d. feed the A3 with some overdrive or saturated signal in order to have the Wah effect do the vroooom correctly. But the sound becomes very dirty and I wanted to mellow it down a bit as Edge does on live performances.
e. i love the sound of the od2r before the a3
f. Try a flat EQ, an OD2 or other similar overdrive, making sure you place it after the A3, not before.
g. Jason Stilwel: The overdrive was immediately after the A3. To my ears the key to that sound is having the overdrive AFTER the A3's reverb. Distorting the reverb makes all the difference in that tone.
h. Amazing what OD after the funkwah did to change the sound.
i. Jason Stilwel: I think I turn the drive in the A3 OD all the way down, yet it's still has some gain to it.
j. Turn off the OD on the A3 and use a pedal like SD1 or TS9.
k. put A3 into the FX loop of the Axe
l. Jason Stilwel: I would say that you definitely do NOT want your A3 in the fx loop. The Au-to-wah will not work right in a loop. Auto-wah, just like a typical wah pedal sounds better when your guitar is plugged directly into it. It's even more important for an auto-wah since it is a dynamic effect that has to get the real guitar signal...not a buffered/boosted/modified signal from a processsor, or a preamp.
3. General settings on A3: -20db, meter should clip
a. Make sure the input level is at -20db. You get the biggest woosh when the input
leds hit the red.
b. the levels for the autowah to function properly is a huge deal. Try to get the Korg's meter to just clip when you strum relatively hard.
c. Phil: I have adjusted the front input trim so that the threshold on the "whoosh" sound will hit on the chords, but not on the picking
d. A3 appears to be used in stereo
4. Patch 76 on SPC-1 Card, Funk Wah, A0 Chain (first additional SPC01 card preset)

5. Patch teaking options
a. turn down the Wah2 Sens enough that the whoosh lasts much longer than on the studio version - I've always considered that to be the biggest difference.
b. The A3 chain is different for live MW. The key difference is in the Wah2 effect: In the stu-dio version, the wah "snaps" quite quickly from high to low, wheras in the live version,it "swoops/whooshes" over a longer time, for the whole chord. Now, every patch I've seen for Mysterious Ways puts Wah2's first parameter, SENS, to 95. This causes the sudden "snap" wah sound. Lowering it to 50-60 gives you thw wide whoosh of the live version.
6. Solo (and other parts)
a. all Edge's slides uses Dynacomp.
b. Jason Stilwel: For the later parts of the song, I add a tempo based delay (dotted 1/8th), and shimmer.
c. Those slides from 2 to 14 on the E string should be played on the B string from the 5th to 19th fret instead. It makes it easier to get to the 19th fret on the E string that way.
d. I can confirm that the TC2290 delay is used with the A3 and separate for the end bits and fills thru the song where the A3 is turned off. Comp on the slide solo also!
7. Other A3 U2 Sound Presets
The Fly 47, 54

I use my stratocaster on middle/bridge pickups. The AD30VT is on VOXEQU1 settings. Never forget the upside down herdim picks!!!
The synt sound for the intro is:
Chain 13
XCIT---15----6.2
MDL1---500---5,5----35-----3,40---2----64
PTCH---(-10)
SDLY---370---65----400------65----0 ---50
SDLY---400---75----300------75----0----72
This is what I play (Eb tuned) with a very light regular downstroke picking:

Listen to the song to figure out when to change.
The patch for the song is:
Chain 01
COMP 68----2----76
OVD1 66----64---3.20----3---10.0----null
DLY1 320---3.0----40----6----null-----42
FLN1 0,20---62---(-65)---0----0.2-----40
HL1 1.8----26----40-----4---(-3)-----8
The patch for the solo is the same as above, only changes the OVD1 to
DST2----88----28----4.00----5----3.50----null
Effects in the chains which are not written means that are off.
p.s. Giank, to play at home the AD30VT is the best choice. You need to emulate the AC30TB to play U2...and what should be better than a Vox to emulate another Vox! It is also very cheap! But if you want to play in front of an audience you better start to save your money to buy an AC30!
Mysterious Ways
________________________________________
When you google for U2 and Korg A3 always comes out the spc01 preset 76 "Funk Wah" for Mysterious Ways... but you don't need just this sound to play MW, there's another sound that you need from the verse before the Adam's Bass solo, then for the guitar solo and up to the end of the song.
So let me introduce you to my VOXEQU2, which is my AD30VT setting for this and other distorted songs.
AD30VT set to emulate AC30TB
Gain 3/4 (o'clock), Volume 11, treble 5, middle 2, bass 8.
My choice for Master at home is always 1 o'clock.
I use this ampli setting for the first part of the song too (when the preset 76 is on...actually I've tweaked a little on the one I use).
And this is the patch I use for the second part of this beautiful song
Chain A1
HDST----80----50----10----0.80----6----3
XCIT----20----1.9
DLY1---460----0.0---15------2----null---28
FLN1---0.20---62---(-65)----0-----0.2---40
I know this is a song for Rickenbacker 330/12 but I play it on my stratocaster, for this patch my choice is bridge pickup.
Come round here for more custom patches made using the famous "earmetric" method, Folks!!

If you don't have a whammy pedal (as I suppose) you can do the intro playing this:

If I remember right from the solo up to the end of the song I switch to the bridge pickup. Give it a try.

Strato on Middle/Bridge pickups.
For this song I use a Boss FZ2 pedal in "Gain Boost" mode before the A3. I set the gain knob to zero, so it works like a clean boost. This is to emulate the Boss FA1 pedal (they're both from Boss and the sound is quite similar). To do this you can: buy a Boss FA1, buy a clone, buy a Boss FZ2, use an overdrive pedal with gain set to zero, tweak on the XCIT of the Korg A3.
Here are my patches:
for the palm muted beginning, the verse arpeggio and the Middle8 (or Middle16 in this case?)
Chain 01
COMP---18---20---22
OVD2---38---54---5.40---9---2.50---null
DLY1---440--1.0---35---10---null---24
For the power chords and chorus riff
Chain 01
COMP---same as above
OVD1---64---44---6.00---9---3.50---null
XCIT---0---3.1
DLY1---same as above
I use this patch for the pitch shifted part too. I don't have a whammy pedal so I shift the notes two octave up on the fretboard. If I remember right this is what I play:
e--18--15--18--15-----------------------------------------------------
B----------------------18--16--18--16------------------------------------
G------------------------------------------17--15--17--15--17--15--17--15--
repeat two times.
... and that's it!

Until The End Of The World
For this song I use my "Vantage" brand (made in Japan) humbucker guitar on Bridge pickup.
This guitar has got a very fuzzy, metallic, nervous sound so I've made my A3 settings to suit this character. Here's a clip
Edge LP has got a warmer and richer tone that I can't fit on my guitar. Try my settings on your instrument and tell me which kind of sound you produce.

Hi guys,
for WTSHNN I use the Boss FZ2 as described above for Beautiful Day.
AD30VT is setted for clean sounds. This is my 3rd and last equalization for the ampli. I call it VOXEQU3.
AD30VT set to emulate AC30TB.
Gain 10 (o'clock), Volume 5, Treble 5, Middle 2, Bass 8.
Master at 1 is still my choice.
Chain 09
COMP---18---20---22
OVD2---9----80---5,40---9---2,50---null
MDLY1--350--3.0---40---3,40---2---44
I use this same setting for I Will Follow too. I just put the ampli on VOXEQU1 and set delay time on 200 msec.

I think the A 3 works with a mono type plug connected to a pedal and not a trs plug ( stereo) so if your plug is a mono type it should work

Can someone help me?
I am trying to load the card SPC01 in the Korg A3.
PC - USB // MIDI OUT - IN A3 / MIDI IN - OUT A3.
MIDIOX installed on PC.
Utilities - MIDI - LOAD - (YES) - LOADING.
Sending via SysEs file.
The midi cable is active.
The screen of A3 is held fixed /LOADING. EXIT/.
Before all this I changed the battery.

What brand of cable do you have? They dont all work properly for some reason.

not sure what you mean by
MIDI A3 Thru or OUT??
I did this in what I believe to be exactly the same way as you describe...
USB -> Audio Interface MIDI OUT -> A3 MIDI IN
I then selected "MIDI LOAD" from A3 menus... and sent the SPC01 file from Midi OX... the only thing I can think of is the retry time or "wait time" between each block of data sent... my midi ox is configured with 2720. this is in the SysEx "Configure" page within the SysEx dialog box...

I refer the selector in A3... MIDI OUT or THRU.

the out/thru selector is not important for this operation.

No, I´ve got the same configuration.
Screen of A3 still LOADING. EXIT.

Well actually, my configuration is slightly different... my audio interface (AKAI EIE PRO) provides the Midi connections in my setup... So this might be where your cable is "not working"... have you definitely got the correct cable connected to the MIDI IN of the A3... I used to have a cable like yours, and I constantly was mistakenly putting the MIDI OUT lead into the MIDI IN on a device, and it wouldn't work or particularly tell me it wasn't working either... swap over the MIDI cables at the A3 end and see if that helps? if not, I am out of ideas. Sorry.

If the cable used is the one in the page 4, it probably won't work.
I first bought the same cable dis all the configs, but Korg A1 wasn't receiving the file. Then I bought m-audio midisport uno and worked just fine, and now with the Korg A2, I tried again to use the old cable, same ****....didn't work. Used the midisport uno, worked fine.

Midisport is not cheap...
I got tired of failing and uploaded the SPC-05 card in the A3.
I have 3 and 5 cards.
Rotary Speaker magnificent sound.
All afternoon lost with the A3.
Now watching as the Madrid "burns down" Munich.
Thanks for all friends!!!

Leo is right, it will be a problem with that USB midi cable. Lots of people have problems with this simple operation because these 'cheap' midi cables don't work.
If your audio interface does not have a midi out then the midi sport is a good option
Agreed I have that exact same cheap midi cable and it works fine to xmit midi from keyboard to computer. But it won't work for A3. But midisport does.

It also depends on the USB port and the OS. Don't use USB-hubs. I have the same device as you working perfectly under Windows XP with my A3.

I've got 5 minuts free so I post another patch.
Just to keep on with Rick 330/12 beautiful rock and roll songs this is the patch for EBTTRT.
Stratocaster on middle/bridge
AD30VT with VOXEQU1
Chain 05
COMP---32---12---100
OVD1---64---54---3.60---9---3.50---null
DLY1---380--6.0---30----6---null---34
If you don't have a whammy pedal (as I suppose) you can do the intro playing this:
e---------------10---10
B-----------------------
G-----7----7-----------
D-----0----0-----------
If I remember right from the solo up to the end of the song I switch to the bridge pickup. Give it a try.
When people says "Chain 05" what preset is that supposed to be???

Hi guys
Wonder if you could help please. The internal battery went, taking the SPC 01 settings with it. I've replaced the battery, got a USB-Midi cable, downloaded Midi-ox, but....
1) When I click on the link to download the file from http://korgaseries.org/original_cards.php, I get a blank screen. Nothing has been downloaded, as far as I can tell. If anyone has the file, I'd love you to email it to me if possible?
2) In Midi-ox, once I have the file, how to I load it into Midi-ox and then send it to the A3? (I've had a read through the midi-ox site and still not clear)
Many thanks in advance for the assistance!

1) try another browser or maybe try a different decompression software. It does seem funky in the zip file.
2) read the A3 documentation, what you're going to do in essence is 'record' midi-ox's 'push' through midi like the old cassette to cassette days. Midi-ox's docs will not be able to describe the process, the key is to understand how the A3 will 'listen' for the information.

Hi everyone. As the internal battery of my A3 passed out I lost all my presets.
I followed every steps discribed in this thread and I think I understand what I should do.
When I'm sending the sysex file to the A3 I get an error message saying there's not enough memory. I don't understand that?
Does anyone had the same problem?

Hey all,
I just picked up an A3 on a late night ebay impulse buy... I am sure you all never experienced this :)
I noticed the http://korgaseries.org site no longer has the zip files for download (at least they didn't work, I tried multiple browsers). I managed to find the card files in old posts on this forum, thanks to Tim and others! I thought I would post the zip files here for future users.
Guitar 1: SPC-01 Card: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xNSi0GxGNx8-ktE-MCvcbshk8KMNIqmo/view?usp=sharing
All Cards: A3 Complete: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YPXdQrFP2CHbZqx7IrZEdOb0nc4MfaQG/view?usp=sharing
Hopefully this will be helpful to someone... I am sure I will be back with questions about the A3, plugged it in last night and felt like I was trying to fly a spaceship with 80s technology. It had the stock presets so the first task will be load SPC-01.
Quick question, does SPC-01 cover most of the sounds/chains The Edge used or was he pulling from other cards?
Thanks!

Well if you find that answer please let us know, lol. I think it was mostly from the SPC-01. Never really heard of anyone using any other Card but the SPC-01 to recreate his Sounds in that Era. But I could be wrong. Make sure your Internal Battery is in good condition before you start loading and saving patches. I just wrote mine down, now if I could only find where I put them....

:) Currently with the stock settings I am not finding anything that sounds like it was used but who knows! However, for a unit that is ~25 years old, I am impressed with the sound quality and responsiveness, a lot of off the wall stuff but some very useful sounds.
I think I will stick with SPC-01 once the midi cables I ordered showed up. Good call on the battery, maybe I will take care of that now before load anything.
I copied a bunch of settings stated earlier in this thread, I am planning on using those as starting points but if you have any great settings or tips, please send them my way!
Thanks!

Yup, Iam always amazed anytime I put on some headphones and play through some of the Preset at how good the Sound really is for being as old as it is.

I was using the A3 for years before i bought an Axe FX, it's a great unit! I listen back to my version of streets on it now and again, feel like that was the best sound i ever had on guitar!

I have hit the day all A3 owners dread - the power on-internal battery message.
I followed the instructions listed in this thread. Got the new battery and replaced it (even with the power on hoping not to lose prior settings) but there were no presets. I think even before I replaced the battery, there may be another issue. Before the battery change, and after, I still get a "20" on the display after power-up.
I then proceeded to try and load the sysex guitar1 file. I'm on a iMac with Big Sur and got the SysEx Librarian software download from Sweetwater/snoise to transfer the MIDI info. I turned on the A3, hit Utility, MID, Load and then pressed play on the SysEx Librarian. The message on the A3 showed as "Data Error!!"
The cable I'm using to go from the USB on the iMac to the IN and OUT/THRU on the A3 is a E-MU X midi 1x1 Tab cable I got a few years ago (I think around the time I bought the A3).
Does anyone have any ideas on what to do to solve/load these setting back on the A3? Or what this "20" means on the display? I'm an Axe FX user now days but thought I'd try to use the A3. When I got it before the battery issue, it worked and sounded great. I'm not sure if this is worth pursuing or not since I really don't have any idea what this ambiguous message means or how to fix it. Any help from anyone who's been thru this would be greatly appreciated!

I spent more time on the SysEx Librarian and the connection parameters and got the load to work. : ) I guess you can teach an old dog a new trick! Happy to hear the Mysterious Ways sound to an amp again!
