I wonder if he will give up all his pedals and racks in the future for touring and use just the AXE. It would be funny

If you look at the first picture on the right, you can see the panel of the rack marked "U2 EDGE FRACTAL SYSTEM"

The crisis is global. The edge needs to spare !
Or the vox are getting older (as himself), and he wants to save his ears in the studio, using Axe FX simulation with U2guitartutorial presets !

Or maybe U2 is planing a Pub tour because Stadium are too expensive to rent !
Or the futur U2 worldtour airplane will be smaller !

The bad news is that some of us will have to build a totally new rack.

Maybe he just want to use this rack as an "easy to carry around" one for small shows. Or event as a spare/backup system in a case of major failure on the AC30s.

The fact is that nobody can really make the difference between an real AC30 , or an Axe FX feeding the same speakers !
This is the trend, and nothing can change it !

What is more interesting is that Edge or Dallas haven't found the right effects (for his ears) in the AXE to replace the Digitech Autowah, The TS9 tube screamer, or a decent rotary sound, and most of all the SDD preamp. But it does tell us he has replaced everything else

If we work on them in the AXE and send them to Principle Management, maybe we can reduce the rig for him
