    Amp hissing/buzzing/not working?

This is a pretty big problem. My main amp (and only good one) has stopped working (stopped working well, at least...). There is always a hissing on my solid-state amp, but now it's worse and my guitar's volume is like a third of what it usually is. It's definitely a problem with the amp, as I have tried 2 different guitars and two cables, and I took out all my pedals. When I turn the volume up to ten it's about as loud as it usually is at like three, which I usually use it at. Unfortunately, the sound is extremely distorted, even on the clean channel, and It's not a 'good' distortion either. It's just nasty. Have any of you had a problem like this, or do you think you might know what it is? I know Dave's built an amp before, maybe he'll know... Thanks in advance! I really want to play guitar but I can't!

Long shot...but...spray some cleaning spray in the pot-meters (when the amp is powered off !!)

Do you really think it's the pots? It's not scratchy when I turn them or anything, but I'll give it a try!

I think it's some kind of electrical/electronic problem, seems like you're missing a part of the amplifier/prestage/endstage...
I'm not an expert, only my 2 cents...

I had an analog problem with my ATTAX, and it was the pots.

Ok, I'm planning on spraying the pots tonight. Any advice on what to do if that's not the problem? All the talk about filter caps and whatnot on other sites is scaring me away from opening it up, but I'm not sure if this only applies to tube amps or what. Should I take it into a repairman if i have to replace something, or should I do it myself. I have no experience with this whatsoever. Usually when an amp stops working, I stop using it for a while, and when I try it a month later, it works! Unfortunately, this is not working this time around...

EDIT: Ok, cleaning the pot shafts didn't work. The amp sound good when I plug the guitar into the 'power amp in' jack, so I know it's a problem with the preamp. Is my only option now to take it to a repair man?

    idiot question maybe.
Have you some spare tube, to give a try.
    Maybe a dying tube ?

Otherwise, I would also go to see a technician.
Tube amps have potential deadly voltage within. If you are not a specialist, ...

Nope. This is a solid state amp, so no tubes. I won't call you an idiot, though.
I'm probably going to bring it to a professional if I can find one near my town. Thanks!
